We have an ongoing commitment to reducing hunger through our support of Food for Others, which distributes free food to those in need in Northern Virginia. Bruen Chapel highlights the hunger issue in the summer months, when local children cannot rely on school breakfast and lunch programs to feed them.
There are two key ways that you can help. Please contribute non-perishable food items any time during the year by leaving them on the mission table (located before you come in the sanctuary). You can also donate spare change and bills to the cause for our super missions shopper to get the best deals on food with the money. We make periodic food deliveries to Food for Others every month or so.
Food for Others has indicated that the following items would be most useful:
- Canned meats (low sodium)
- Canned vegetables
- Canned fruit (in water or juice)
- Canned chili
- Low-sugar cereals like Cheerios or Chex
- Boxed macaroni and cheese
- Peanut butter
- Bagged beans
- Rice
- Reusable grocery bags
Next spring, we plan to supplement our canned and non-perishable food giving with some fresh produce from a new church garden plot. Look for more information in early 2015 to (garden) plot against hunger.
